The Spaniard Domènec Torrent, assistant to Pep Guardiola for more than a decade, is the new coach of Flamengo, replacing the Portuguese Jorge Jesus, announced today the champion Brazilian soccer club.
In a statement issued on the official website, the Rio de Janeiro emblem revealed that the 58-year-old coach had signed a contract for a season and a half, until December 2021.
“I am very happy to be part of this great nation. We are looking for winning titles. See you soon, ”said Torrent, in a short video released on Flamengo's official account on the social network Twitter.
Domènec Torrent arrives at the club to surrender the Portuguese Jorge Jesus, who last week was confirmed as the new coach of Benfica, after just over a year at the Rio de Janeiro club, in which he won six trophies, including the Libertadores Cup and the Brazilian championship .
The Spanish coach, who coached teams like Palamós, Palafrugell and Girona, was Pep Guardiola's assistant coach for 11 years between 2007 and 2018, with spells at FC Barcelona B, FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City.
In 2018, he abandoned the technical team of ‘citizens’, to take over the North Americans from New York City FC, a club he would leave in November last year.
Domènec Torrent's debut ahead of Flamengo is scheduled for August 9, when the Brazilian champion receives Atlético Mineiro, in Maracanã, in the first round of the 'Brasileirão'.
