Coimbra University today announced the launch of the “The Secret of UC“, Which aims to encourage the Portuguese to visit the oldest university of Portugal and one of the oldest in the world.
“In this post-confinement phase, in which tourism breaks are expected, namely with regard to the number of foreign visitors, the University of Coimbra, which receives around 500 thousand visitors annually, wants to make this historic institution known to the public national, through a unique experience ”, informed the UC today.
“If the name of the University of Coimbra is recognized anywhere in the world, with this campaign we want more and more people to also know the heritage that is part of its essence”, says Luís Simões da Silva, vice-rector of the University of Coimbra .
The campaign will last until July 17, providing “an experience full of mystery” to visitors, “who will have the unique opportunity to discover a 730-year-old secret kept in the oldest Portuguese-speaking university, following strict hygiene and safety measures” promises the University.
The Joanina Library, the São Miguel Chapel, the Royal Palace, the Sala dos Capelos, the Casa das Caldeiras and the Botanical Gardens are the main points of the campaign.
The University guarantees that unidirectional circuits have been created in order to avoid the crossing of people in all visitable spaces and the use of a mask, hand hygiene and the practice of detachment will be mandatory.
Entrances to the Joanina Library building, made by the Academic Prison, will be limited to 10 people every five minutes. The São Miguel Chapel and the Royal Palace will have a limitation of 10 visitors per entrance.
“From Paço das Escolas to Jardim Botânico, we have to unveil to visitors the secrets of more than seven centuries of history – always in safety and with the fulfillment of all the recommendations of the health authorities”, guarantees the vice-rector.
