Merkel today in Brussels for meeting with leaders and debate in the European Parliament

Precisely a week after assuming the presidency of the Council of the European Union – in what constitutes the start of the trio of presidencies of which Portugal is part (in the first half of 2021) -, and at a time when the lifting of restrictions due to the 19 begins to allow face-to-face events to resume in Brussels, Merkel will have a meeting with the presidents of the Commission, the Council and the European Parliament, and will also visit the European assembly.

On July 2, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that she had invited the presidents of the European Council, Charles Michel, and Parliament, David Sassoli, as well as the rotating presidency of the EU Council, now in the hands of Germany, for a meeting that aims to pave the way for a quick agreement on the post-covid recovery package.

“Getting to an agreement quickly is crucial. To this end, and as provided for in Article 324 of the Treaty, I invited David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament, and Angela Merkel, German Chancellor, in his capacity as rotating presidency of the (EU) Council, as well as Charles Michel, President of the European Council. , for a meeting on July 8, to take stock of progress and prepare for the intense political negotiations ahead, ”said the president of the community executive.

In the afternoon, Merkel will participate in a debate in the European Parliament on the program of the German presidency for the second half of the year, with the chancellor having already assumed on several occasions that the main priority is precisely the recovery plan to rebuild the European economy from the deep shock caused by the covid-19 pandemic.

On July 2, at the end of a videoconference meeting between the German Government and the community executive, Merkel and Von der Leyen agreed on calls for a quick agreement on the recovery package that would allow the European Union to overcome “the biggest crisis” of your story.

Pointing out as the great purpose of the German presidency “the overcoming of the crisis”, Merkel defended the proposal presented in late May by the European Commission – with many common features with a Franco-German proposal advanced just before -, of a 750 thousand Recovery Fund million euros (two thirds of which will be channeled to Member States through grants), associated with a Multiannual Financial Framework for the next seven years in the amount of 1.1 billion euros.

The declared wish of both is that an agreement on the Recovery Fund and the Union budget for 2021-2027 be reached already at the summit scheduled for 17 and 18 July in Brussels.

This European Council is, moreover, the subject of another debate that will take place in the European Parliament today – in plenary session between today and Friday – with the participation of Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen.
