UFC heavyweight contender Francis Ngannou gave his opinion on the heavyweight division and the dangers of fighting Daniel Cormier for the heavyweight strap. For the past few days, Ngannou and Jon Jones have been going back and forth on Twitter.
Just when we thought that a fight between the two was finally going to happen, Jones dropped a bombshell. In a tweet, “Bones” revealed that the UFC is unwilling to pay him the extra money to move up a weight class.
Francis Ngannou Vs Jon Jones: Why Everyone Wants This Fight To Happen
With Jones out of the picture, Francis is left without an opponent. He last fought against Jairzinho Rozenstruik at UFC 249, in which he defeated the Suriname native via a quick knockout. After the Jones fight fell through, Ngannou expects another long break before fighting again.
Francis Ngannou is upset with the UFC
Seemingly frustrated with the company, Ngannou said: “I think the UFC needs to do something and make a title fight happen. I don’t know when the pandemic will end. No disrespect to Stipe because he’s a well-deserved champion but the division needs to move on.” (Via: BJPenn.com)
Moreover, he said that the division cannot be held down any longer. And the UFC has to do whatever it takes to get things going in the heavyweight division. He also stated that it has almost been a year since the last title fight in the division.
Miocic—the reigning UFC heavyweight champion—has been out for a while because of eye surgery. Also, he cannot compete during the pandemic as he holds a second job as a firefighter-paramedic. This means that the trilogy between Stipe and DC will get delayed until later this year.
At this moment, the company is probably looking for an alternative, which may include stripping the champion and setting up Francis Ngannou vs Daniel Cormier for the heavyweight strap.
Based on DC’s previous statements, it is clear that he will not back down from fighting the “The Predator.” Francis, on the other hand, wants DC to fight Stipe because he believes that it is Cormier’s retirement fight and there is no point in calling him out.
Daniel Cormier is a “bigger” challenge for Ngannou
“Honestly, I am more confident in a rematch against Stipe than I am to fight Cormier. I think Cormier is a bigger challenge for me than Stipe,” he explained.
“I’ve been in there with Stipe and he couldn’t finish me. If that was DC he would’ve finished me. I was done, I couldn’t move and Stipe still couldn’t finish me. I think if I fight Stipe again, I’ll have more knowledge and how to beat him.”
