Hundreds of people participated today in the funeral of firefighter Carlos Carvalho, of the Cuban corporation, in the district of Beja, who died as a result of injuries sustained during the fight against a fire in Castro Verde.
The plaza of the mortuary and, later, the cemetery of Vila Alva, in the municipality of Cuba, were small for the large hundreds of people who want to attend the last firefighter's last farewell.
The funeral ceremonies were attended by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Minister of Internal Administration, Eduardo Cabrita, and the president of the League of Portuguese Firefighters, Jaime Marta Soares.
After the body had been veiled and the mass at the mortuary, the urn was placed in a Cuban fire engine, which traveled slowly through the streets of Vila Alva to the village cemetery.
In front of the funeral procession, 16 firefighters followed, holding the flags of each of the 15 corporations in the district of Beja and the district federation and just behind the Alentejo corporation's vehicle with the urn.
The head of state and the minister, accompanied by the large hundreds of people, including many firefighters in uniform, followed the vehicle with the urn, in a course of about 200 meters, to the village cemetery.
At the cemetery, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the firefighter Carlos Carvalho and the sirens of several fire trucks parked outside rang in unison.
Firefighter Carlos Carvalho, 40, who suffered severe burns in the fire in Castro Verde, on the 13th of this month, died on Thursday at the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon, where he had been transported by helicopter.
This is the fourth firefighter to die in the context of firefighting in Portugal in July.
According to the commander of the Cuban Fire Department, José Galinha, the other member of the corporation, Carlos Heleno, 30, who also suffered severe burns in the fight against the same fire, is in a “stable situation” at Hospital de São José, in Lisbon, where he was transported by helicopter.
The President of the Republic lamented, on Thursday, the death of firefighter Carlos Carvalho, considering that this has been a “tragic week” for Portuguese firefighters and that they are owed “deep homage”.
The Minister of Internal Administration determined, at the time, to open an inquiry into the forest fire in Castro Verde.
Eduardo Cabrita also expressed “deep consternation” at the death of the Cuban firefighter, who did not resist the injuries sustained in fighting the fire.
The League of Portuguese Firefighters (LBP) also expressed “heartfelt condolences” to the family and colleagues of firefighter Carlos Carvalho.
