The 18th edition of the road awareness campaign “Sécur'été 2020 – Summer in Portugal” is taking place today in Vilar Formoso, promoted by the association of young Portuguese descendants Cap Magellan, which is aimed at emigrants who travel by car to Portugal during holidays summer.
The campaign whose main objective is to reduce the number of accidents during long journeys and after night departures, this year gives special attention to the prevention of covid-19.
This morning's initiative on the main land border of Portugal was attended by the Secretary of State for Internal Administration, Patrícia Gaspar, the Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities, Berta Nunes, and the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports , João Paulo Rebelo, among other officials.
The government welcomed the emigrants and called for the care they should take during their stay in the country.
“We are here, in a very fast campaign, just to ask you three things,” said the Secretary of State for Civil Protection in approaching a family of emigrants.
He added: “Be very careful with everything that concerns rural fires, always behave properly when they are in forest areas; a lot of attention on the road, respecting all the rules of circulation, rest periods, the normal; and, as you know, we are still in the covid-19 pandemic and it is essential to keep observing this care as well ”.
Patrícia Gaspar also urged emigrants to pass the message on to family and friends.
“Did a good travel?” Asked the Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities, Berta Nunes, in turn, to a family from Manteigas who are emigrated to France.
The official questioned whether the family always thought of going to Portugal on vacation or had doubts, due to the pandemic, but she got as an answer that the decision for the trip was taken because “it is the country that calls”.
For his part, the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports, João Paulo Rebelo, appealed to emigrants who today arrived in Portugal through the border of Vilar Formoso so that, in times of pandemic, they behave “sanitaryly advised” during their stay in the parents.
The movement of entry of foreign registered vehicles in Portugal through the border of Vilar Formoso was intense during the morning of today, being higher than that verified in the month of July.
According to Colonel Cunha Rasteiro, commander of the Territorial Command of GNR da Guarda, in previous years, between 25 and 30 thousand vehicles used to enter Portugal and, this year, according to the available indicators, this scenario “will not escape much from normality”.
During the morning Vilar Formoso entered “about 500 vehicles per hour”, he said.
Luciana Gouveia, coordinator of the Cap Magellan association, told Lusa that the movement of vehicles observed today on that border occurs because many emigrants in France have chosen to travel by car.
“People who usually came by plane, prefer this year to come by car, they feel safer inside the vehicle, there is a kind of security bubble sensation”, he justified.
