The covid-19 pandemic has killed 339,758 people and has infected 5.2 million worldwide since December, according to a balance sheet by the France Press agency (AFP) at 19:00 today TMG, based on official data.
According to data collected by the French news agency, at 19:00 TMG (20:00 Lisbon), 5,260,970 cases of infection have been officially diagnosed in 196 countries and territories since the epidemic began last December in the province Chinese from Wuhan.
The countries with the most deaths in the last 24 hours were Brazil, with 1,001 deaths, the United States with 989 deaths and Mexico with 479.
However, AFP warns that the number of diagnosed cases reflects only a fraction of the actual total infections, as a large number of countries are testing only those situations that require hospital treatment. Among these cases, at least 2,031,200 are now considered cured.
Since Friday's 19:00 GMT count, 4,179 new deaths and 100,671 new cases have occurred worldwide.
The United States, which had its first death linked to the coronavirus in early February, is the country most affected in terms of number of deaths and cases, with 96,479 deaths for 1,611,691 cases.
At least 350,135 people have been declared cured to date by US authorities.
After the United States, the countries most affected are the United Kingdom, with 36,675 deaths and 257,154 cases, Italy, with 32,735 deaths (229,327 cases), Spain, with 28,678 deaths (235,290 cases) and France with 28,332 deaths (182,469 cases).
Among the countries hardest hit, Belgium continues to account for the highest percentage of deaths in relation to its population, with 80 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Spain (61), Italy (54), the United Kingdom (54) and France ( 43).
China (excluding the Hong Kong and Macao territories), where the epidemic began in late December, officially accounted for a total of 82,971 cases, including 4,634 deaths and 78,258 cures.
Since the last assessment, made at 19:00 GMT on Friday, the Central African Republic and the Gaza Strip have recorded the first deaths caused by the new coronavirus.
Europe totaled 173,279 deaths and 2,004,226 cases at 19:00 today, the United States and Canada 102,912 deaths and 1,695,281 cases, Latin America and the Caribbean 37,762 deaths and 685,508 cases, Asia 13,745 deaths and 428,300 cases , the Middle East 8,704 deaths and 333,744 cases, Africa recorded 3,226 deaths and 105,456 cases and Oceania 130 deaths and 8,463 cases.
This assessment was carried out using data collected by AFP delegations from the competent national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO).
However, AFP warns that due to corrections by the authorities or the late publication of the data, the 24-hour increase numbers may not exactly match those published the previous day.
Portugal accounts for 1,302 deaths associated with covid-19 in 30,471 confirmed cases of infection, according to the latest daily bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) on the pandemic.
In relation to the previous day, there are 13 more deaths (+ 1%) and another 271 cases of infection (+ 0.9%).
