“Taking into account the pandemic situation we are experiencing, related to the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, and to guarantee a safe return to classes for students, teachers, teachers and the whole community, the University of Coimbra has prepared a Prevention Plan and Action Protocol that defines the measures for the prevention, containment and mitigation of risks associated with the spread of COVID-19, which is already being implemented, ”announced the UC, in a statement sent to the Lusa agency.
The 24-page document foresees action measures for the various scenarios foreseen, for the entire community of the University of Coimbra, and began to be applied today, the first day of classes.
Face-to-face classes, “complemented with synchronous transmission when necessary”, the development of the technological platforms UC Teacher and UC Student, and a random screening program for COVID-19 disease, involving the collection of about 100 samples daily (2,000 people per month) ) are some of the measures that make up this Plan.
“We are about to start one of the most demanding academic years ever and it is with the same spirit and sense of responsibility with which we faced the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic that we prepare to face the demanding months ahead”, justifies Amílcar Falcão, rector of the University of Coimbra.
In addition to the mandatory use of a permanent mask inside the UC buildings, hand hygiene and cleaning, physical distance and respect for the defined circuits, the UC also defined that the teaching and non-teaching activities will be mostly in person and complemented, when necessary, with synchronous transmission.
Synchronous transmission of classes will be an option when there is not enough space available in the classrooms, the impossibility of a student from the class concerned to travel to Coimbra, the result of restrictions imposed by the health authorities due to the pandemic, or the existence of a student or teacher on who imposes a special duty of protection, namely those who are part of a risk group defined by health authorities.
“For all students and teachers who, for duly proven reasons, are unable to physically attend, UC has invested in the development of a technological platform for teachers (UC Teacher) and for students (UC Student), which allow the aggregation of the functionalities of structures such as Zoom, or similar platforms, and the information contained in the UC academic management portal (NONIO), optimizing interactions and contributing to the dematerialization of academic procedures ”, says UC.
The University of Coimbra has also developed a random screening program for COVID-19 disease, involving the collection of about 100 samples daily (2,000 people / month). Students and workers will be called (via email reception) to go to the previously defined harvest locations.
Screening is not mandatory, however, as with the installation of the STAYAWAY COVID application, it is strongly recommended by UC.
“In this Plan prepared by the UC it was also established that the access to the buildings of the UC is mandatory to measure body temperature, which must be below the values defined by the DGS, this measurement being valid for a period of 24 hours (the established value is 38 degrees Celsius) ”, informs the University.
The Prevention Plan and Action Protocol of the University of Coimbra follows the guidelines and standards of the World Health Organization and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, as well as the National Contingency Plan and the Guidelines issued by the Directorate-General for Health .
