Covid-19: Russia records more than 9,400 cases in the last 24 hours

Russia recorded more than 9,400 new cases of infected with the new coronavirus and 139 deaths from covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 335,882 infected and 3,388 deaths, according to official data.

In the last 24 hours, the country added 9,434 cases to the number of people infected with the covid-19: it goes on the eighth consecutive day with daily records of new infected people below 10,000.

In Moscow, the epicenter of the country's pandemic, 3,190 new cases of coronavirus were detected, bringing the total to 161,397 infected in the Russian capital.

Also in Moscow, 67 people died from covid-19 during the last 24 hours, which means that 1,934 deaths are registered in the capital, until today.

According to the EFE agency, on the 15th, a large-scale program to detect antibodies in the population began in Moscow.

In total, six million tests are planned to be carried out as part of a seroprevalence study, which means that half the population of the Russian capital will be tested.

So far, said the head of the Moscow health department, Alexéi Khripun, more than 50,000 tests have been carried out, and of these, 12.5% ​​have detected antibodies to immunoglobulin G (IgG).

“We see that the proportion of Muscovites who have developed immunity to the new coronavirus is comparable to some other cities in the world,” said Alexéi Khripun.

At the national level, Russia's health official, Anna Popova, said that it is planned to start conducting massive immunity tests from the end of June.

The official recalled that these tests are already carried out on medical personnel and, so far, 10,000 workers have been tested in 51 medical centers in the country.

On the other hand, the director of the Nikolái Gamaleya Institute in Russia, Alexandr Guintsburg, said today that he plans to start producing a vaccine against covid-19 in late summer.

The specialist pointed out that preliminary tests of the vaccine in animals have shown good results and that he hopes to be able to request authorization to pass the clinical tests to humans in the first half of June.
