The leader of the PSD today attributed the controversy raised by the statements of Mayor Fernando Medina about combating the pandemic of the covid-19 to “messages” and “wars” between the Lisbon Chamber, the Government and “within the PS”.
Rui Rio, who was speaking in Porto on the sidelines of a press conference on the proposed changes to the functioning of the Assembly of the Republic, declined to comment on the resignation made by his party at the Lisbon Municipal Assembly aimed at the mayor from the capital, Fernando Medina, saying that he does not comment on “messages”.
“I didn't want to get involved in this for a very simple reason. The Doctor. Fernando Medina came to say, in words a little more violent than mine, what I already said. Objectively, the fight against the pandemic is going badly in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley (…). These are wars of the Lisbon Chamber with the Government or wars with the PS and messages for each other and that I don't comment on, ”said Rui Rio.
Fernando Medina said on Monday, in the comment space of TVI24, that the increase in the number of infected by covid-19 in the region is due to “bad management” and the lack of professionals in the field, demanding quick responses.
“It is a direct note to all those responsible for this matter, that it is necessary to act quickly. Either there is the capacity to contain this quickly or else the right people have to be placed in the right places ”, underlined the socialist mayor and president of the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon.
Today, the PSD represented at the Lisbon Municipal Assembly defended that the mayor's president should be resigning.
Rui Rio took the opportunity to stress that, from his point of view, the fight against the pandemic of the new coronavirus “is going wrong” in the region of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo which, he stressed, “may mean that it can go wrong in Portugal”.
“Because (Lisbon) is the worst place to go wrong. It is the place where more people go and where more people leave. To contaminate the country is the worst place ever, ”he said.
The PSD president was also asked whether the current problem is one of health authority or political responsibility, having replied that “in the end it is always a political problem”.
“The person in charge is always the Prime Minister, the former is the Minister, before the Secretary of State, the Director-General. In the end it is always a political problem, but there also needs to be technical capacity to advise political power, ”said the leader of the Social Democrats.
The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 505,500 deaths, including 1,576 in Portugal.
The Government decided last week that Portugal will be, as of Wednesday, divided into three alert levels to deal with the covid-19 pandemic, with most of the country going to an alert situation, while the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon (AML) for contingency situation (intermediate level) and 19 parishes of AML maintain the state of calamity.
