Covid-19: Politicians and experts meet today for the tenth time at Infarmed

These sessions, which start with technical presentations and then have a question phase, were an initiative of the Prime Minister, António Costa, with an objective of sharing information, and lately they have been focusing more on the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, where there are most new cases of infection with the new coronavirus have appeared.

PSD President Rui Rio considered in an interview with Porto Canal, released on Saturday, that these meetings at Infarmed “begin to be of little use” and should “give an objective and short photograph” of the situation, followed by “technical advice” .

After the last meeting, two weeks ago, the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who usually summarizes the conclusions to journalists, reported that several experts recommended the option of “concrete and specific measures for specific geographical areas”, when “Parish level”, instead of “generic measures”.

The head of state considered that this was “one of the most interesting points” of this session, and he ruled out scenarios of uncontrolled spread of the disease in Portugal and of rupture or pre-rupture of the National Health Service (SNS).

However, the Government took decisions in this regard, placing most of the national territory on alert due to the pandemic of covid-19, with the exception of the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, where 19 parishes continued in a calamity situation and the rest passed the contingency.

In these sessions at Infarmed – National Authority for Medicines and Health Products, in Lisbon, state councilors also participate by videoconference.

The covid-19 pandemic, a disease caused by a new coronavirus detected in December last year in central China, has affected 196 countries and territories and has already killed more than 500,000 globally, according to the French news agency AFP.

In Portugal, the first cases were confirmed on March 2 and 1,629 people have so far died out of a total of 44,416 counted as infected, according to Tuesday's report from the Directorate-General for Health (DGS).
