The Madrid Masters 1000, one of the most important on the clay calendar, was initially scheduled for May, but was rescheduled for September 12 to 20 due to the covid-19 pandemic.
In a statement, the tournament organization explains that the appearance of new outbreaks of covid-19 in Spain, a country in which the disease has already caused 28,445 deaths, leads the regional government to recommend the cancellation of the tournament, taking into account sanitary conditions.
The organization guarantees that it will “analyze the matter taking into account all the details”.
The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 673,000 deaths and infected more than 17.3 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.
