Covid-19: India exceeds five million cases

India has registered an additional 90,123 cases of covid-19 in the past 24 hours, exceeding five million infected since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the Indian Ministry of Health.

The country, the second in the world with the highest number of cases, after the United States, has accumulated 5,020,359 infections since the beginning of the pandemic.

On the last day, the country also counted 1,290 deaths caused by the new coronavirus, with the total number of deaths caused by the disease rising to 82,066.

India remains the third country in the world with the most deaths from the pandemic, after the United States and Brazil.

The Indian state of Maharashtra, where the financial capital, Mumbai, is located, remains the most affected, with more than one million cases.

Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh follow. Together, these states represent more than 60% of the total infections in the country.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed at least 929,391 deaths and more than 29.3 million cases of infection in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the France-Presse news agency (AFP).

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

After Europe succeeded China as the center of the pandemic in February, the American continent is now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
