“I am still not at ease to say that we have reached the peak,” said the Guinean doctor.
According to the COES coordinator, there seems to be a decrease in the number of cases in Bissau, but at the level of the regions, it is not yet known what the evolution will be.
Guinea-Bissau detected the first covid-19 patients in March and, according to data released by COES, on Friday, the country has already recorded 1,368 positive cases, including 12 fatalities and 153 recovered.
When the situation seemed to be concentrated in the autonomous sector of Bissau, the first cases appeared in Bafatá, which already has five infected people, and Gabu, with two, the largest cities in the country after Bissau.
“With this situation that we are having in the regions, it will be very difficult to say whether we have already reached the peak in the country. If it is only at the level of Bissau, I can dare to say that we are almost reaching it, but it is very difficult to define this given the behavior of the population ”, said the director of the National Public Health Laboratory.
According to Dionísio Cumba, it is very difficult to define the peak in the country and it is necessary to “take a break” before there will be more certainties.
For the Guinean doctor, everything will depend on the behavior of the population, but he considered that in Bissau more people are already seeing preventive measures.
Guinean President Umaro Sissico Embaló has already prolonged the state of emergency in the country four times and imposed a curfew, but recently decided to open borders and start the lack of definition.
Dionísio Cumba warned, however, that the lack of definition could increase cases of infection with the new coronavirus in the country, because people may think that the situation has improved.
“It is necessary to respect the rules and the authorities must use all mechanisms. Otherwise, we will have an increase in new infections because of the apparent freedom that people have ”, he stressed.
As part of the fight against the pandemic, the Guinean President created on Friday the High Commissioner for the Fight Against Covid-19, whose main objective will be to reformulate the strategic plan, coordinate partnerships and revive the fight against the new coronavirus.
Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 392,000 deaths and infected almost 6.7 million people in 196 countries and territories.
More than 2.8 million patients were considered cured.
In Africa, there are 4,756 confirmed deaths in almost 170,000 infected in 54 countries, according to the most recent statistics on the continent's pandemic.
Among African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Guinea-Bissau leads in number of infections (1,368 cases and 12 deaths), followed by Equatorial Guinea (1,306 cases and 12 deaths), Cape Verde (536 cases and five deaths) , São Tomé and Príncipe (499 cases and 12 dead), Mozambique (354 cases and two dead) and Angola (86 infected and four killed).
The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
