The PS general secretary warned today that the next two years will be very tough for the country, in the face of an economic and social crisis caused by the covid-19, which is why his party will have to focus on the essentials.
This idea of the PS focused on the “economic and social crisis” and not on other issues was the only indirect reference that António Costa made to the presidential elections in January 2021, in a long speech that he delivered to the members of the National Political Commission of his party.
“We are going to face two very tough years of fighting to protect our companies, jobs and the income of the Portuguese. It will be two very demanding years and there is no optimism to think that we will be able to do this in less time ”, warned the socialist leader.
Then, António Costa stressed that “there is also no reason why there is no confidence in the country about the Portuguese's ability to overcome this crisis, just as they overcame the previous crisis”.
“To all who doubt that this is not possible, I would like to remind those who in November 2015 also said that everything was impossible”, he said, in a part of his speech in which he spoke about the rise of his Finance Minister, Mário Centeno, the presidency of the Eurogroup – proof of “international recognition of the country”.
“We have to make an effort to recover the country again. It is in this and only that that the PS has to concentrate with all its energy and determination, focusing on the essential. What is essential is now to relaunch the economy without leaving the pandemic out of control ”, defended António Costa.
