Covid-19: Costa asks the PS for humility and a broad political consensus against the crisis

The PS general secretary warned today that, however strong his party may be, the dimension of the economic and social challenge facing the country, because of the covid-19, requires dialogue and political and social consensus.

António Costa was speaking at the opening of the National Political Commission of the PS, in a speech open to the media and which focused on the four pillars of the proposed economic and social stabilization program that the Government will present to parties with parliamentary representation and to the social partners at the beginning next week.

“Just as we faced the covid-19 pandemic, we have to face this economic and social crisis, which implies that we must make an effort to maintain the level of political and social consensus. Democracy has not been suspended [with the state of emergency] and democracy will not be suspended ”, pointed out António Costa.

The socialist leader even made a point of referring to the polls, which “point to a very strong PS”, but to leave the following message to the socialist leaders: “We must have the humility to understand well that, for all the strength that the PS own, we need all Portuguese, all social partners and different parties in the Assembly of the Republic to continue this very demanding path that we will face in the coming years ”.

“It is with this spirit of dialogue and openness that we must seek to continue the governance of our country. We knew how to unite against the virus and we have to know how to unite now against the economic crisis, against unemployment and against impoverishment ”, he reinforced.

According to the Prime Minister, it is with this spirit of openness that, at the beginning of next week, he will listen to parties with parliamentary representation and social partners.

“All parties have presented their proposals, some better, some worse, some possible, others less so. We will also listen to the social partners, who are essential to this process of economic and social stabilization in the country. We want to design an economic and social stabilization program that will be translated into the Supplementary Budget to be presented in June in the Assembly of the Republic ”, he added.
