Covid-19: Cape Verde did about 3,000 rapid tests this month

At the usual press conference to take stock of the daily pandemic of the new coronavirus in the country, Artur Correia stated that the rapid tests began to be carried out at the beginning of May, from the moment when this availability was made.

Of the nearly 3,000 tests carried out so far, the same source said that the majority were in Praia (2,200), the country's capital, on the island of Santiago, and the rest on Boa Vista, the island where the first case was diagnosed. covid-19 in Cape Verde and which since Thursday has not registered active patients.

The city of Praia is now the epicenter of the disease in the country and is also where rapid tests are being intensified in the neighborhoods with the most cases, namely Vila Nova, Ponta d'Água, Achada de Santo António, Cobom, Tira Chapéu and Achada Grande Front.

“We must say that the data is very encouraging. We haven't found many positives and these tests have also served to screen all positive cases, which will be reconfirmed with a PCR test (for the infection of the new coronavirus) ”, said Artur Correia.

“This gives us a more reliable direction to do the PCR tests and, at the same time, it gives us information on how the virus would be circulating in the community and the results are very encouraging”, said the spokesman of the Ministry of Health.

Cape Verde has already diagnosed an accumulated of 362 cases of covid-19, since March 19, in the islands of Santiago (303), Boa Vista (56) and São Vicente (3).

Of the total, three resulted in death, 130 were considered recovered, two were transferred to their countries and the country currently has 227 active patients, all on the island of Santiago.

Of the cases in isolation, 223 are in Praia, two in Tarrafal and two in Santa Cruz.

Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed almost 330,000 deaths and infected more than 5.1 million people in 196 countries and territories.

More than 1.9 million patients were considered cured.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
