Covid-19: Brazil with 35,026 deaths after the fourth consecutive day with more than a thousand deaths

Brazil totals 35,026 deaths due to covid-19, of which 1,005 were registered on Friday, the fourth consecutive day in which the barrier of 1,000 daily deaths was exceeded, informed the Ministry of Health.

Regarding the number of confirmed cases, Brazil recorded 30,830 infected in the last 24 hours, in a total of 645,771 people diagnosed with covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The South American country, which has an estimated population of 210 million, recorded the recovery of 11,977 infected patients in the last 24 hours, totaling 266,940 people recovered from the infection with the new coronavirus.

São Paulo, the focus of covid-19, was the state most affected on Friday, the day it registered 5,365 cases and 282 deaths. The second federal unit to account for the highest number of deaths in the last 24 hours was Rio de Janeiro, with 146 fatalities and 2,134 infected.

Brazil is the third country in the world with the most deaths from covid-19, and the second with the largest number of confirmed cases.

After several delays in the disclosure of the covid-19 numbers by the Brazilian Ministry of Health, Bolsonaro claimed that this is a method to disseminate the data in a more consolidated way. However, it did not explain why it is for more than two months the numbers were consolidated earlier.

In recent weeks, the tutelage of Saúde do Brasil has changed the way it disseminates data related to the pandemic. Press conferences, which previously took place daily, were held on alternate days, and several hours before the executive released the figures for the daily evolution of covid-19.

The time at which the numbers started to be released also changed. At the beginning of May, the data were released at 17:00 (local time, 21:00 in Lisbon), then they were released after 19:00 (local time, 23:00 in Lisbon). However, in the last three days, the Health folder updated the daily information regarding covid-19 at 22:00 (local time, 02:00 in Lisbon).

The delay in disclosing the data was poorly received in Congress and raised questions about the Government's motivation and lack of transparency, according to the local press.

When asked about the delay in this disclosure, Bolsonaro said: “The Jornal Nacional articles are over”, referring to Rede Globo, which broadcasts this news item, as “funerary TV”.

Bolsonaro also did not confirm whether he was the one to give the order for the disclosure of the numbers to occur after the exhibition of the Jornal Nacional, stressing that, with the new schedule, the data are “more consolidated”.

“It doesn't matter who left (the order), it is fair to leave at 10 pm, the data is fully consolidated. Nobody has to run to attend Globo ”.

“You have to know who lost their lives because of covid or with covid. Sometimes the person has ten comorbidities, 94 years old, and has caught the virus. Globo, Jornal Nacional, like to say that Brazil is the record holder in deaths. There is even a lack of seriousness. Place deaths per million inhabitants. It is like wanting to compare the deaths of Brazil, which has 200 million inhabitants, with a country with 10 million inhabitants ”, said the President to journalists in Brasília.

After the statements by the head of state against Globo, the television network issued a statement, declaring that the public will know how to judge the Government's actions.

“The public will know how to judge whether the Government was doing right before or if it is doing right now. You will know if you act out of technical motivation, as you claim, or if you act out of purpose that you cannot confess more clearly. Globo viewers can be sure of one thing: they will be informed about the numbers as soon as they are announced because Globo's journalism always runs to serve its audience ”, reads the note.

Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 394,000 deaths and infected almost 6.7 million more people in 196 countries and territories.

More than 2.8 million patients were considered cured.
